Here is the story about my SECOND time ending up in the hospital with Rhabdomyolysis. The first time was very similar circumstances.
***Enjoy the novel (or not) but I’m bored on day 7 in the hospital. ***
Background:
I’ve been a recreational athlete all my life. There has been very few times I’ve taken breaks from fitness and training. I consider myself mostly a runner these days (40-50 miles per week in season), but my background over the last 20 years spans over many sports including: contact kickboxing, boxing, ultramarathons & marathons, Brazilian Jiujitsu and CrossFit. I am no stranger to intensity nor volume, however, training throughout the year does ebb & flow in focus. Spring and summer is run focused, winter and fall is strength focused with running in the background.
To give an idea of my fitness: I’m a 40 year old female, 5’4, 118lbs, 16-17% Body fat (InBody scan) and in the context of Murph, my best time was 38:00 Rx a couple years ago. Last year, 42:00 Rx (*running injury had me milking the run).
I do not crossfit on a regular basis anymore. In fact, Murph is the one Crossfit workout I look forward to every year because it’s fun, social and it’s a fun way to gauge my fitness. I’ve done Murph over a dozen times. In the last few years I did Murph 3 weeks in a row w/out any issues. This year, I miscalculated and ended up in the hospital.
Also important to note: typically, in April every year, I begin training for Murph. I’ll start building volume in push ups and pull ups via rounds of CINDY into my workouts every week until Memorial Day Murph. This year, I only did 1 prep session, 3 weeks before memorial day; a scaled Murph: 1 Mile run, 10 rounds of CINDY (vs a full 20 rounds), 1 Mile run, no 14# vest. I finish the workout in 24 minutes and felt good with a little bit of DOMS that lasted a couple days. I fell off this routine and did ZERO push ups or pull ups from that day on until MURPH. Oh how I regret this.
Here’s how it all went down:
5/28 I go for a 2 hour run in warmer than usual weather. Post run, I was covered in salt residue. I was dehydrated. Later that day, I got busy and forgot to properly hydrate aka drink some electrolytes with my water.
5/29 MURPH day! Feeling ok but also knowing I’m de conditioned with pull ups and push ups (Red Flag #1), I opted to skip the 14# vest. Murph is, for time: 1 mile run, 100 pull ups, 200 push ups, 300 air squats, 1 mile run (Red Flag #2 high repetition, body weight movements with eccentric contractions). I felt strong on the runs, decent on pull ups but Murph got hard faster than usual. My push-ups dropped to sets of 4-5, then sets of 3, then 1 at a time, which brings me to red flag #3: pushing through muscle failure.
Immediately after, my arms swelled. Later that day, my arms began to stiffen. I could not bend my arms and it only got worse from there. I hoped for DOMS which I know would get better in a few days. That didn’t happen.
Rhabdo
With rhabdo, intense physical exertion causes so much skeletal muscle damage that your muscles cells die en mass; they break open and sluff off into your circulatory system, where your kidneys have to filter them out. This puts you at risk for acute kidney failure, and in extreme circumstances, cardiac arrest. Your kidneys essentially choke on your own muscle detritus. The swelling muscle tissue also expands within the limits of your fascia and if there isn’t enough room in the fascia’s compartments to accomodate the swell, arteries and nerves get squeezed, causing cascading problems, including potential limb loss. If it gets bad enough, you will need a fasciotomy, where skin and fascia are sliced open to the air to accommodate the swelling tissue. Don’t google it — it’s not pretty.
5/30 - 6/1 Arms are intensely sore with limited range of motion and gradually swelling. I could barely bring a glass of water to my mouth. My arms are in pain at rest. It is hard to differentiate between normal delayed onset muscle soreness and Rhabdo, but online comments echo the common warning: if your urine darkens, get to ER. My urine was dark but not a brown color. I’m still in denial and carry on drinking tons of water. Pain is getting worse, arms are swelling more and more. Range of motion worse. My husband had to get me dressed for work, and I could not feed myself so I barely ate. My gut tells me something is wrong.
6/2 With things getting worse each day, i called my primary care doctor to avoid the ER. He sends me for bloodwork and decide next steps.
Creatine-Kinase (CK) is an enzyme inside muscle cells, so blood CK levels show how much muscle detritus is choking up your kidneys. My bloodwork comes back with CK levels at 42K (normal levels for female are <200ul). My doctors calls with the results and orders me to go to the ER asap. I check into the ER and they draw blood again…CK is up to 52K. I get admitted to ER with IV to flush out my system.
Bloodwork showed my kidneys were working fine, but they could fail at any time. The docs ramped me up to the fluid rate of 250 ml/hr meaning that, at least initially, my 5 liters of human blood got diluted with a full liter of solution every hour. I started plumping up like the Michelin man. This was by far the worst part. The original swelling was already bad enough but with the IV, the fluid filled my arms, my skin stretched tight and shiny. My arms swelled to what looked like 2x its normal size.
Swelling peaked the next couple days making it difficult for the phlebotomist to find veins on my arms and draw blood. My arms, once praised from phlebotomists for having awesome, plump veins became practically invisible. The blood draws become dreadful, each one bringing on multiple pokes leaving behind bruises. They resorted to the tops of hand and by day 3, I looked like a drug addict with track marks.
6/3 CK levels barely drop to 49K (previously 52K). I’m pounding water, peeing 2-3 times an hour.
6/4 CK levels go UP to 60K. I’m so swollen. I’m cranky. I still can’t feed myself very well. I’m crying because i miss my family. This sucks. Drink more water.
6/5 CK levels 43K. Ok please let’s keep this going. Dr decide to drop IV rate to 200mL/hr. All the swelling is making my skin very itchy and inflamed! Drink, pee, repeat.
6/6 CK levels 29K. Oh thank god.
6/7 CK levels 16K. Please let me out. Dr’s want me to stay until it drops somewhere between 5K-10K. They drop IV to 125ml/hr and then to 75ml/hr to help maintain progress but help with the edema. I request for a 2nd blood draw that evening to maybe get out that night. Results that night showed a slight increase to 17K…I start to mentally unravel feeling like I’m never gonna be discharged.
6/8 CK levels 10K! Swelling is still to the max despite lower IV rate. Drs felt good that despite dropping the IV rate my levels still came down overnight and kidneys have been perfect. Drs said as long as i keep with water, no strenuous physical activity for the next few days i had their blessing to be discharged. After 6 nights in the hospital, I get to go home!
I get home and am still swollen to the max. I have just enough mobility in my right arm to wash my hair and wash my face. Not being to move about freely and indecently takes a huge emotional toll on me. As much as i miss my family, I’m still cranky from the pain and discomfort. The creases in the front of my elbows are inflamed and tender and super itchy. It feels like I’m still such a long way to feeling like myself again.
Day 1 after hospital discharge, swelling is noticeably down by 50%! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Drinking and peeing every hour.
Day 2 post hospital, swelling wise, I’m almost back to normal (~90%). I still have some edema in my upper arms where the fluids kinda pooled while i was sleeping with my arms elevated. Skin still so itchy. Using hydrocortisone to soothe the itch. Water fest continues.
The first time I got rhabdo, it was the pull ups that did me in. I remember not being able to do a single or half a strict pull up weeks after the hospital. I had always been able to do 15-20 strict pull ups! I had to build them back up from ground zero. I eventually got there though. That said, I’m curious to see how my push ups will be impacted after a full recovery. I would not be surprised if I can’t do a single push in the next few weeks.
I will see my primary dr in 2 days for more bloodwork to check my CK levels before clearing me for any exercise. He says to expect for regular bloodwork until it normalizes.
Takeaways: You can be fit and get Rhabdo, in fact, you can be high risk. The recipe for rhabdo in athletes is returning from a break and jumping full bore into a different or new form of workout especially with high volume, eccentric exercises.
Being stuck in the hospital, I reflected back on many “what-if’s”. What if I didn’t go for that long run the day before? What if i just hydrated properly during/after that run? What if I just slowed down during Murph and not race the clock? I don’t know but I will be overly conservative doing any high volume, high intensity workout especially if I’m in any way not ramped up for it. I will remember the swelling of my arms and how bad it hurt. Or the fear of doing permanent damage over a stupid workout!!!
Why did this happen a 2nd time for me? Ego and bad judgement; something i have struggled with all my life in training. I really thought i made improvements to set ego aside but it crept back up. I’m married now with 2 kids and i can’t afford to be this dumb lol. I’ve assigned my husband to oversee my training choices (specifically when I’m thinking about jumping back to a different form of exercise) and I’ve hired a coach to help me reign things in.
Let it be a cautionary tale. Train smart and safe!

REVENUE:
TOTAL ADDRESSABLE MARKET
I’ve used a top-down approach when building my revenue model. I followed the revenue forecast of the meat industry [Plant based inclusive] (SOURCE)
%STAKE
The %stake of the market held by BYND changes to a small extent to avoid being too optimistic in my forecast. I used historic numbers when forecasting %stake.
COST
The general principle I took for forecasting Cost was following management’s guidance from 2023 Q1, their goal of “Sustainable growth” and focusing more on margins.
COGS
Initially, COGS is going to be lower from reduction in co-packing and overall headcount bringing production more in house.(SOURCE)
But going forward, COGS is going to be lower due to higher economies of scale. (SOURCE) Management has set forth that they plan to achieve price parity with animal protein by 2024, so the largest fall in COGS will appear in the first few years of forecast.
The moment price parity is achieved, I’d guess that it takes 2-3 years for BYND to reach close to the level of margins as the animal protein industry as BYND needs to sort out other issues e.g., how to more efficiently ship higher volume, Agriculture has ops. margins of 7.84% (SOURCE).
ADVERTISING
Advertising is going to slightly increase in the first few years of forecast. Management has stated that there is a lot of disinformation in the market and consumers are relatively unaware of the health benefits of BYND (SOURCE). So, management will scale up advertising efforts. Opting for less granularity I assume that advertising will remain the same as 2022.
SHIPPING
Opting for less granularity when forecasting Shipping, the cost of Shipping is constant for the past few years so Shipping is assumed to follow historic trends.
During the high growth period, BYND may be not ready to deal with larger volume of sales so I’d assume that cost of shipping slightly ticks upwards for the next 2-3 years before tending back down.
OVERALL
Margins of BYND will be higher than Animal protein due to cheaper production cost (SOURCE), e.g. Pea protein costs $5/kg whereas Animal protein costs $300/kg
NON-CASH ADJUSTMENT:
D&A and CapEX
Management has given out guidance that they want to get more capital efficient, so for the first few years of forecast I’d assume that BYND has net negative or close to net negative CapEX for the first few years. Onwards, as BYND develops better products and gets more widely recognized they will begin priming their net reinvestment for growth before tapering down for maturity.
Change in NWC
Management has given guidance that their inventory levels are quite high and they are planning on selling off, I’d assume that the first few years they are aggressively selling off inventory. But in the long run, they will have positive change in NWC as I believe they may require to hold some stock.

So, I’ve looked at the averages for the agriculture industry and assumed that BYND will tend towards these numbers as the business gets more efficient, COD remains constant.
Average Unlevered Beta = 0.91
Average D/E ratio = 33.87%
Average Levered Beta = 1.15
Average COE = 9.40%

R&D:
R&D
Historical data has to be reconciled as management treats R&D expenditure as an operating cost. This is inaccurate as R&D provides value for more than a year, so it should be capitalized. Assume R&D expenditure counted from 2017 onwards and it takes 6 years to develop a product. (SOURCE)
CONCLUSION:
I value BYND at $17.10 for my base case. BYND has a hidden pocket of value that most investors do not consider, their NOL carryforward. Even when we take a conservative view and only consider those that do not expire. Their NOL carryforward is still 738M. I believe that as countries turn to be more environmentally conscious BYND will be the first in line to profit. Even if environmental concern is out of the picture, plant protein has a huge potential to be significantly cheaper and even healthier than animal protein. The less privileged will be able to benefit from this, not having to pick between health and hunger.

3) Given that I used book yield as a last resort, it may not necessarily give the most accurate representation for Cost of Debt.
4) Management may or may not tend towards the efficient wacc I’ve defined in my DCF for reasons such as they may not be able to cheaply do it or may not see a need to do so in general.

I'm looking for some advice on purchasing the mobile home my family and I have lived in for 4 years. My mom and I started renting a mobile home at the beginning of 2019, she unfortunately died at the beginning of this year. I am 25, work landscape and make between 600-700 a week, rent is 1300 a month currently and goes up every year.. I asked my sister to cosign on a mortgage with me because I figured it would save me some money, but she says she can't because she wants to buy her own house this year. Suggestions on what to do with my 3 big boxes of secondhand and vintage clothes.
I have been selling vintage/secondhand clothes for about 5 years now. It all started when I lived in Florida and I couldn't help but BUY AND BUY from thrift shops like Goodwill & Salvation Army. So to keep my addiction going I would buy alot of clothes, put them on depop and wear them till they sold. Result: I always had a new wardrobe and I could keep buying "new" clothes.. GENIUS. When I moved back home to Ireland I tried to continue my hobbie, I even bought from wholesalers(in the middle of covid). It was good so well but I have since falling out of love with buying and selling. I have over 3 tubes of clothes from wholesalers and from Florida thrift shops that I want to get rid of. I'll happily sale it as a bundle, if someone want to get me a text and hand pick item(we can video call) if someone knows a friend or family who sells vintage and needs a new box of clothes, I am open to suggestions and don't want to see these clothes go to waste.
I will always buy from charity and thrift shops. I don't reject buying in bulk, there's some amazing pieces that I've upcycled and tailored which are now so unique and no one else has!

I sold a brand new and sealed phone on Swappa back in March. The photos in the listing clearly show the phone box was sealed.
Before shipping the phone insured with Signature Confirmation via USPS I took multiple photos of the box showing both seals intact.
I also took a video of me packing the phone. I clearly showed that phone was sealed as I packed it up.
When USPS first attempted to deliver the phone to the address on PayPal (which was a different name than the buyer) no one was home.
The phone was picked up at the post office 3 days later-signed for by yet another person but seemingly related the person the phone was shipped to.
A few weeks later the buyer sent a message on Swappa that the phone wasn't sealed and wanted a refund.
I uploaded all of the pictures that show that the box was still sealed.
I also included a link to the packing video.
All the buyer responded with is that I am holding the seal closed-even though I have pictures with the seals intact where I am not holding the phone box.
Swappa deferred to PayPal.
About 2 months later the buyer opened a PayPal case.
The only thing the buyer presented was 1 pictured from 6/5/23 that showed one seal was opened.
I uploaded all of the pictures showing the sealed box.
When I reminded the buyer I had submitted proof on Swappa that the phone was sealed the buyer accused me of trying to scam them.
At that point I escalated the case.
Anticipating this I had worked on documentation that presented the timeline of the sale to shipping. I included all of the pictures and the link to the video.
I also uploaded all of the pictures again.
Well for some reason PayPal agreed with the buyer despite my very clear proof that the phone was sealed when I sent it.
I am not confident the buyer will return the phone in new condition or even the correct phone. Also I worry about getting rocks in the box.
What's my recourse at this point?

I'm currently a warehouse supervisor at one of the largest CDMO companies in the world. I joined this company after 8 years in Industrial Sales where I made less than $50k a year. I enjoy about $83k a year, soon to be $87-$91k depending on how HR considers how I've only been a supervisor for 4 months. I just got an offer from another larger 1st party pharmaceutical company for and associate role in which I'd be essentially moving from materials to manufacturing. The pay would be $65k a year. I'm an hourly employee btw and I don't have a degree at 31 years old. I'm considering going back to school.
Pros and Cons of my current job:
Pros:

Great Pay
CDMO looks great on a resume
10% annual raises based on performance

Cons:

30-45 minutes drive on a toll road both ways (Anyone in the DC-Baltimore Area?) The cost is about 6-8k for Tolls, Gas and general maintenance.
Overwhelming workload (I'm writing this on what was supposed to be a day off, but I had to come in to work on something someone else should be doing)
Constant panic based on stock market No real vision Massive turnover in the C-Suite
Hard to move to a different department because recruiting focuses on external hires.

Pros and Cons of the potential new job:
Pros:

Literally within walking distance of my apartment
Great work/life balance Growth is nearly limitless and I could pivot if an internal position opens up.
Everyone who interviewed me says they've been free to move around the company.
14 paid holidays and 3 weeks PTO.

Cons:

The massive pay cut
Taking another risk
5% annual raises based on performance, but it would increase with promotion.

I know ridding stress is always saught after, but is the pay cut too much? I live with my GF who makes $100k in IT so we wouldn't be struggling and we don't have a bread winner relationship.
I just need some random people on the internet advice.

My wife, my son, my daughter are gone. That’s a fact. I’m not from here, and I’m horrified by this universe. My world - you wouldn’t believe it. It’s perfect. It was a perfect world, unlike this one. And most importantly, no one ever aged - that’s right, we lived forever and ever. No one ever died either.
The first thought that occurred to me when I arrived here is “I’m going to die. I’m going to age, grow old and nasty, and then die.” In my homeworld, we waged a war against death long ago and we won. We won eons ago, and nobody ever aged or died. This world lost the war against death. Everyone born in this world ages and dies horribly.
I want to describe my world in more detail, so you can burn it into your hearts. We are born to parents, who are always loving and caring. We grow, hit puberty, and have young love. Everyone always meets their perfect partner. No one is ever lonely. We marry, have children, and these children repeat the process all over again. Each family formed is always perfect. One son and one daughter.
In this world, people often get lonely, even suicidal. I’m looking at lonely and suicidewatch here. In this world, nothing ever seems to work out for everyone. Some people and families do get lucky and avoid the brunt of the negativity, but even they face death within the century from the curse of aging. My wife, my son, my daughter are gone. They’re in my homeworld. Not here. Over there. Safe. It’s me who is in danger.
Is it really true that within several decades the natural entropy of this world will decay my flesh, so that my skin wrinkles? That I will soon have gray hair and become infirm? That decades after that, I will lose mobility, and finally, suffer death - something that doesn’t even exist where I’m from?
I’m terrified, and you should be too. I want to go home, but I don't have a way to travel there. My world exists in another dimension. In the meantime, I’m counting the decades before my inevitable death in this cursed world, shouting Help! Help! to anyone who can hear me. No one can help. Everyone in this cursed world dies all the same.

I am writing this from RIF. In fact, the majority of my posting and moderation is done through RIF on my mobile device. This allows me to pop in when I have a free moment or two and clear the queue, answer modmail, and respond to user reports. The other active mod(s) also use a similar method to stay on top of things here. With the upcoming API changes, it is likely that our ability to effectively moderate this subreddit in a timely and responsive manner will be extremely limited. As such, the mod team is in discussion as to what the future will be like.
First, we will probably be going dark with many other subreddits on the 12th for two days. We are discussing leaving what is up visible during that time, but not allowing any new posts or comments. Attempting to make a post or comment will result in removal of the post/comment and an autogenerated message explaining that the subreddit is dark.
Second, we are considering that because it is likely to be similar to what the future here will look like. New minimum qualifications will be in place to ensure that posts are high quality and high content. These will include account age, karma, length, and flair requirements that must all be met. Posts that don't meet all the requirements will be automatically removed and a message will be sent that explains it was removed for failing to meet the minimum requirements and appeal is not going to be considered.
Third, all posts that do meet all the requirements we set will be sent to the moderation queue for manual approval. The authors of those posts will receive an automated message telling them that their post is in the queue and it will be reviewed and approved or denied when the moderation team is able to get to it on a desktop computer. This could be days in the future. Editing an approved post will put it back on the queue for reapproval. This will prevent the need for mods to constantly check in for reports or other issues. It will also keep the queue to a length that is manageable in the time we plan on spending at home moderating here.
Posts that will be approved will have to be high quality, informative, show an effort to research answers if asking a question, follow all the rules, and either likely to generate equally qualified responses from the community or stand alone as a source for those coming here to research. Posts linking to videos, images, or outside resources will likely not be approved due to the extra burden of moderation. Although, that depends on the amount of posts that make it into the queue.
All this is still in discussion, but is likely. It's been a fun ride, but the mods here do this so much as it doesn't negatively impact our lives and enjoyment. This is not a job for any of us. We do it for our own reasons and when the effort becomes too much to keep up, we have to make changes that work for our real-life balance.
